Pharmacological Action
Mechanism of Action: Succinylcholine Chloride is a depolarizing neuromuscular blocker. It mimics the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and binds to acetylcholine receptors on muscles, causing an initial depolarization and transient muscle contractions (fasciculations). This is followed by paralysis as the muscle cannot respond to further nerve impulses due to sustained depolarization (phase I block). With prolonged exposure, the block can transition to a phase II block, which resembles a non-depolarizing block.
Uses: 1. Anesthesia Adjunct: Succinylcholine is used primarily to provide muscle relaxation during surgeries and other medical procedures requiring tracheal intubation or mechanical ventilation. 2. Rapid Sequence Intubation: Due to its rapid onset and short duration of action, it is ideal for facilitating endotracheal intubation.
