III. Uses
Metoprolol Succinate is a selective β1-adrenoreceptor blocker. It acts primarily on cardiac β1-receptors at doses much lower than those required to block peripheral vessels and bronchial β2-receptors. This selectivity is dose-dependent. Due to the lower peak plasma concentration of the sustained-release formulation compared to the same dose of the immediate-release formulation, the sustained-release formulation exhibits a relatively higher β1-receptor selectivity. Metoprolol has no intrinsic sympathomimetic activity and virtually no membrane-stabilizing activity. It is a raw material drug used in the treatment of angina pectoris and hypertension. It is also a commonly used medication for the management of hypertension, coronary heart disease, chronic heart failure, and arrhythmias.
