Pharmacological Action

1.     Drug Type:

o    Oxcarbazepine is an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing drug used primarily in the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder.

2.     Mechanism of Action:

o    Oxcarbazepine acts by blocking voltage-sensitive sodium channels in neuronal cell membranes. This action stabilizes hyperexcited neural membranes, inhibits repetitive neuronal firing, and reduces the propagation of synaptic impulses.

o    Additionally, it enhances potassium conductance and modulates high-voltage activated calcium channels, reducing neurotransmitter release, and thus stabilizing neural activity.
