Pharmacological Actions
Rivastigmine works by inhibiting the activity of cholinesterase, thereby reducing the hydrolysis of acetylcholine. This increases the concentration of acetylcholine in the brain, improving nerve transmission and thereby enhancing the cognitive functions, social abilities, and daily living capabilities of patients. Its inhibitory effect on central acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is stronger compared to its effect on peripheral acetylcholinesterase, and it can also inhibit butyrylcholinesterase.
