Pharmacological Actions:

  • Drug Class: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor  (SSRI)

  • Mechanism of Action: Fluoxetine functions primarily by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) in the brain. By blocking the serotonin transporter (SERT), it increases the level of serotonin in the synaptic cleft, thereby enhancing neurotransmission and mood regulation.

  • Therapeutic Uses: Fluoxetine Hydrochloride is commonly used to treat a variety of conditions including major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bulimia nervosa, and panic disorder.  It may also be used off-label for conditions like premenstrual dysphoric  disorder (PMDD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
