Pharmacological Effects

Class: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI)

Mechanism of Action:
- Paroxetine works primarily by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) into neurons. This increases the extracellular level of serotonin in the synaptic cleft, enhancing serotonergic neurotransmission, which is associated with mood elevation and can help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Therapeutic Uses:

Depression: Used in the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD).

Anxiety Disorders: Effective in treating generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder (SAD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD): Used to relieve the symptoms associated with PMDD.

Off-Label Uses: May also be used in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and premature ejaculation, among other conditions.
