Chemical Properties
Meropenem is a carbapenem antibiotic with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. It exerts its antibacterial effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
It readily penetrates the cell walls of most Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria to reach its target site, penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).
Pharmacological Effects
Meropenem demonstrates activity against a wide range of sensitive and resistant bacteria, including Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Bacteroides fragilis.
It is used extensively to treat various infections such as respiratory infections (e.g., chronic bronchitis, pneumonia), intra-abdominal infections (e.g., cholecystitis, cholangitis), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, meningitis, sepsis, and other severe infections.
