Pharmacological Action

Loratadine belongs to the long-acting tricyclic antihistamines with high selectivity for peripheral H1 receptors, exhibiting potent and prolonged effects. It competitively inhibits histamine H1 receptors, thereby suppressing allergic symptoms induced by histamine. Loratadine has no significant anticholinergic or central depressant effects and does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier.

Indications

  • Loratadine is primarily used to relieve symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, runny nose, nasal itching, and itching and burning sensations in the eyes.

  • It is also indicated for alleviating symptoms and signs of chronic urticaria and other allergic skin conditions.
