Paracetamol, commonly known as acetaminophen, is a widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and analgesic drug.
Basic Information
English Name: Paracetamol
Chemical Formula: C8H9NO2
Molecular Weight: 151.16
CAS Registry Number: 103-90-2
Pharmacological Action
Paracetamol exerts its antipyretic effect by inhibiting prostaglandin-synthesizing enzymes in the hypothalamic thermoregulatory center, thereby reducing the synthesis and release of prostaglandins (PGE1), bradykinin, histamine, etc.
It also exerts analgesic effects by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins in the central nervous system.
Compared to aspirin, Paracetamol has weaker anti-inflammatory effects and does not affect platelet function or coagulation mechanisms.
Clinical Applications
Paracetamol is indicated for the relief of mild to moderate pain, such as headaches, migraines, toothaches, menstrual cramps, joint pains, muscle aches, neuralgia, etc.
It is also commonly used to reduce fever in cases of common colds or influenza, lowering the body temperature of febrile patients.
