Epalrestat is an orally active aldose reductase inhibitor.
Basic Information
English Name: Epalrestat
CAS Number: 82159-09-9
Molecular Formula: C15H13NO3S2
Molecular Weight: 319.3986
Pharmacological Effects
Epalrestat exerts its effects primarily by reversibly inhibiting aldose reductase, an enzyme involved in the polyol pathway that converts glucose to sorbitol. Accumulation of sorbitol within neurons can impair neuronal function, leading to symptoms of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Therefore, Epalrestat helps prevent, improve, and treat these neuropathy symptoms associated with diabetes.
Indications
Epalrestat is primarily used to prevent, improve, and treat symptoms of diabetic peripheral neuropathy, such as numbness, pain, vibration sensation abnormalities, and cardiac arrhythmias associated with high glycosylated hemoglobin values.
