Mechanism of Action

Finasteride is a potent and reversible inhibitor of the steroid 5α-reductase type II (SRD5A2) enzyme. By inhibiting this enzyme, Finasteride blocks the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in peripheral tissues. This reduction in DHT levels leads to a decrease in DHT concentration in the serum and tissues, which can reverse the miniaturization of hair follicles and promote hair growth in men with androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness).

Uses

Finasteride is primarily used for the treatment of male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It promotes hair growth and prevents further hair loss in men with male pattern baldness. In addition, it is also used to reduce the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for surgical intervention in men with BPH.
