.Proton Pump Inhibition: Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that acts by reducing the production of stomach acid. It inhibits the hydrogen-potassium ATPase enzyme system (the proton pump) on the gastric parietal cell surface, blocking the final step in acid production.
.Gastric Ulcer Treatment: It is used in the treatment of ulcers in the stomach and the upper part of the small intestine (duodenal ulcers). Lansoprazole facilitates the healing of gastric and duodenal ulcers by reducing gastric acidity.
.GERD Management: Lansoprazole is effective in managing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition where stomach acids flow back into the esophagus causing heartburn and damage to the esophageal lining.
.Erosive Esophagitis: It is also prescribed for treating erosive esophagitis, which involves the erosion of the esophageal lining caused by acid reflux.
.H. pylori Eradication: Lansoprazole is used as part of multi-drug regimens to eradicate Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium associated with peptic ulcer disease and chronic gastritis.
.Hypersecretory Conditions: Lansoprazole is used in the treatment of conditions characterized by excessive acid secretion, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
.Maintenance Therapy: It is used as a maintenance therapy to prevent the recurrence of gastric and duodenal ulcers, as well as to manage chronic GERD.
