Solubility: Slightly soluble in dichloromethane and DMSO
Pharmacological Action
Tecovirimat is a broad-spectrum envelope protein inhibitor that exhibits potent antiviral activity against all orthopoxviruses, including variola virus (the cause of smallpox) and monkeypox virus. Its mechanism of action involves binding to viral genes, preventing the release of the virus from infected cells, thereby reducing the chances of infecting other normal cells. Tecovirimat has been shown to significantly reduce symptoms and mortality in animal models infected with monkeypox virus.
Clinical Applications
Treatment Indications: Tecovirimat is used to treat smallpox in adults and children weighing at least 13 kg. It has also been used compassionately to treat a small number of patients with monkeypox and cowpox, demonstrating good efficacy and safety.
