Uses and Applications

Simvastatin is a methylhydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor primarily used to lower cholesterol levels, specifically total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C).

• For patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, or mixed hypercholesterolemia, simvastatin is indicated as an adjunctive therapy to diet when the response to nonpharmacological measures alone is inadequate.

• It reduces elevated levels of total cholesterol, LDL-C, apolipoprotein B, and triglycerides.

• Simvastatin also increases high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), thereby lowering the LDL-C/HDL-C and total cholesterol/HDL-C ratios.
