Iodixanol is a novel nonionic X-ray contrast agent with a specific osmolality (290 mosmol/kg), making it the only contrast agent that is isotonic with plasma when administered intravascularly. Its structure is a nonionic dimer, belonging to the third generation of iodine contrast media.
Uses and Applications
Iodixanol is primarily used for CT image enhancement and arteriovenous angiography, including but not limited to cardiovascular angiography, cerebral angiography, peripheral arterial angiography, abdominal angiography, urography, venography, and CT-enhancement examinations in adults. Due to its isotonicity, it causes less irritation to blood vessels and tissues during in vivo use, reducing the occurrence of adverse reactions.
Pharmacokinetics
Distribution: Iodixanol distributes rapidly in the body, with a mean distribution half-life of approximately 21 minutes. The apparent volume of distribution is equal to the extracellular fluid volume, indicating that iodixanol is primarily distributed in the extracellular fluid.
