Pharmacological Actions

Carbamazepine is an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing drug used primarily in the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder.

1.     Mechanism of Action:

o    Sodium Channel Blocker: Carbamazepine stabilizes inactivated sodium channels, reducing repetitive neuronal firing and diminishing synaptic transmission. This action helps control seizure activity.

o    Mood Stabilization: In bipolar disorder, Carbamazepine aids in diminishing the effects of manic episodes by modulating neurotransmitter activity in the brain.
