Pharmacological Actions

Carvedilol causes vasodilation through its α1 receptor blockade and non-selective β receptor blockade, reducing peripheral resistance and lowering blood pressure. The vasodilation is primarily due to the α1 receptor blockade, and some metabolites also have β receptor blockade effects, contributing to mild vasodilation.

Indications

  • Primarily used for the treatment of symptomatic heart failure.

  • Also used for primary hypertension, especially mild to moderate hypertension or hypertension associated with renal insufficiency or diabetes.
