Cephalexin

Cephalexin

Cephalexin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the first-generation cephalosporin class of drugs.

Basic Information

  • English Name: Cephalexin

  • CAS Number: 15686-71-2

  • Molecular Formula: C16H17N3O4S

  • Molecular Weight: 347.39

Mechanism of Action

Cephalexin exerts its antibacterial effect by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It demonstrates potent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and also exhibits good activity against some Gram-negative bacteria. Since human cells do not possess cell walls, Cephalexin is relatively non-toxic to human cells.

Indications

Cephalexin is indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:

  • Respiratory infections: such as acute tonsillitis, pharyngitis, otitis media, sinusitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia.

  • Urinary tract infections.

  • Skin and soft tissue infections.
