Albendazole is a highly effective and broad-spectrum antiparasitic drug belonging to the benzimidazole class, which exhibits the broadest spectrum of antiparasitic activity and the strongest insecticidal effect among its peers.
Basic Information
English Name: Albendazole
CAS Number: 54965-21-8
Molecular Formula: C12H15N3O2S
Molecular Weight: 265.33
Pharmacological Action
Albendazole is rapidly metabolized in the body into sulfoxide and sulfone, which primarily inhibit the polymerization of the cytoplasmic microtubule system in the intestinal wall cells of parasites. This blockage disrupts the absorption of various nutrients and glucose by the parasite, leading to depletion of its glycogen reserves. Additionally, it inhibits the fumarate reductase system, impeding the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), ultimately rendering the parasite unable to survive and reproduce.
Indications
Albendazole exhibits high activity against a wide range of parasites, including nematodes, schistosomes, cestodes, and more. It is particularly effective in eliminating intestinal parasites such as ascaris, enterobius, hookworm, and trichuris in humans. It is also used for deworming livestock.
