Terbinafine Hydrochloride is an antifungal agent primarily used to treat fungal infections of the skin and nails.
Mechanism of Action: Terbinafine works by inhibiting the enzyme squalene epoxidase. This inhibition is critical because squalene epoxidase is essential in the biosynthesis of ergosterol, an important component of fungal cell membranes. The inhibition of this enzyme leads to a deficiency in ergosterol and an accumulation of squalene within the fungal cell, which is toxic, thereby disrupting cell membrane synthesis and function, ultimately causing fungal cell death.
Spectrum of Activity: Terbinafine is effective against a broad range of dermatophyte fungi, such as Trichophyton species, which commonly cause conditions like athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm. It is also effective against Candida species and various molds.
