Nimesulide

Nimesulide

Nimesulide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and an antirheumatic agent.

Basic Information

  • English Name: Nimesulide

  • Chemical Formula: C13H12N2O5S

  • Molecular Weight: 308.31

  • CAS Registry Number: 51803-78-2

Pharmacological Action

Nimesulide belongs to the class of NSAIDs, exhibiting anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic effects. Its mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it is thought to be related to the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis, the release of leukocyte mediators, and the oxidative reaction of polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Nimesulide selectively inhibits cyclooxygenase, a key enzyme in prostaglandin biosynthesis, which increases the body's sensitivity to pain. By inhibiting cyclooxygenase, Nimesulide reduces the body's perception of pain, thereby providing analgesic effects.

Indications

Nimesulide is primarily indicated for the following conditions:

  • Chronic joint inflammation, such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

  • Pain and inflammation following surgery and acute trauma.

  • Pain caused by otolaryngological inflammation.

  • Dysmenorrhea.

  • Fever and other symptoms caused by upper respiratory tract infections.

Additionally, Nimesulide can be used for toothache or gum disease, cancer pain, rhinitis, tonsillitis, gingivitis, periodontitis, prostatitis, urethritis, and more.
