Febuxostat is a medication used to treat gout and hyperuricemia.
Basic Information
English Name: Febuxostat
CAS Number: 144060-53-7
Molecular Formula: C16H16N2O3S
Molecular Weight: 316.37
Indications
Febuxostat is primarily used to treat gout and hyperuricemia. Hyperuricemia is a condition characterized by excessive production or inadequate excretion of uric acid in the body, commonly seen in gout and uric acid nephrolithiasis. By reducing uric acid levels in the blood, Febuxostat can decrease the frequency and severity of gout attacks and prevent the formation of uric acid kidney stones.
Mechanism of Action
Febuxostat works by inhibiting the activity of xanthine oxidase (also known as xanthine dehydrogenase) in the body, thereby reducing the production of uric acid. Uric acid is a primary cause of gout because high uric acid levels can lead to the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints, causing joint pain and inflammation.
