Latanoprost

Latanoprost

Latanoprost is a commonly used ophthalmic medication.

Basic Information:

  • English Name: Latanoprost

  • CAS Number: 130209-82-4

  • Molecular Formula: C26H40O5

  • Molecular Weight: 432.59

Pharmacological Action:

Latanoprost is a novel phenyl-substituted propyl ester prostaglandin F2α, a selective F2α receptor agonist. It is an inactive substance that rapidly permeates the cornea and is hydrolyzed into its active free acid form in the cornea and plasma. It enhances aqueous humor outflow through the trabecular meshwork, requiring a small dose but producing a significant increase in outflow, reaching the choroidal supraciliary space and effectively reducing intraocular pressure. Additionally, it may reopen obstructed trabecular meshwork pores in glaucoma patients.

Indications:

Latanoprost is primarily indicated for the local treatment of open-angle glaucoma and intraocular pressure elevation that is difficult to manage or intolerable with other medications. It is also effective in pigmentary glaucoma, angle recession, chronic angle-closure glaucoma in the quiescent stage, quiescent uveitis, and exfoliation syndrome. However, it is ineffective in active uveitis.
