Octreotide Acetate

Octreotide Acetate

Octreotide Acetate is a synthetic octapeptide drug that serves as an analog of somatostatin.

Basic Information

  • English Name: Octreotide Acetate

  • CAS Number: 79517-01-4 (or 83150-76-9)

Pharmacological Action

Octreotide Acetate functions by acting as a somatostatin receptor agonist, primarily targeting subtype receptor SSTR2. By mimicking the actions of somatostatin, it inhibits the release of various hormones such as growth hormone, insulin, glucagon, decreases gastric acid and pancreatic enzyme secretion, reduces gastric motility and gallbladder emptying, decreases splanchnic blood flow, and lowers portal pressure.

Clinical Applications

Octreotide Acetate is primarily used in the treatment of conditions associated with excessive growth hormone secretion, including acromegaly and Cushing's syndrome caused by pituitary adenomas. It is also indicated for the management of functional gastrointestinal endocrine tumors like insulinomas, glucagonomas, and gastrinomas. Furthermore, it is recommended for preventing postoperative complications after pancreatic surgery, treating acute pancreatitis, vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) tumor-induced watery diarrhea, and various other conditions.
