III. Uses and Pharmacological Effects
Uses: Lubiprostone is a gastrointestinal medication used primarily for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation.
Pharmacological Effects:
As a CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) activator, it selectively activates chloride channel 2 (CIC-2) located on the apical plasma membrane of gastrointestinal epithelial cells, increasing intestinal fluid secretion and motility, thereby enhancing bowel movements and alleviating symptoms of chronic idiopathic constipation.
Does not alter plasma sodium or potassium concentrations.
In clinical trials, common adverse reactions to Lubiprostone were gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea, which were mostly dose-dependent or independent and had no significant effect on electrolytes.
