• Uses: Lubiprostone is a gastrointestinal medication used primarily for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation.

• Pharmacological Effects:

• As a CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) activator, it selectively activates chloride channel 2 (CIC-2) located on the apical plasma membrane of gastrointestinal epithelial cells, increasing intestinal fluid secretion and motility, thereby enhancing bowel movements and alleviating symptoms of chronic idiopathic constipation.

• Does not alter plasma sodium or potassium concentrations.

• In clinical trials, common adverse reactions to Lubiprostone were gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea, which were mostly dose-dependent or independent and had no significant effect on electrolytes.
